Preventive Dentistry

What is “Preventive Dentistry”?
Your commitment to care for your teeth is essential to maintain dental health and preventing the onset, progression and recurrence of dental disease. Preventive dentistry represents collaboration between you, Dr. Novack and her staff. Each stage in life brings unique oral health needs. We are committed to educating our patients and thereafter providing you with the skills and understanding to preserve your oral health.
Prevention starts with your commitment to personal twice-daily effective oral hygiene coupled with following a balanced nutritious diet. Our team is dedicated to arming you with the tools and techniques necessary to maintain your oral health between dental visits. Routine professional care involving dental examinations, periodontal and dental cleaning (scaling) and necessary x-rays are required to detect, treat and prevent dental-oral disease. Other preventive measures such as sealants, fluoride and prescription mouth rinses may be advisable to help protect your teeth.
Dental care represents an investment in your total well being. Prevention is the most cost effective means of maintaining a healthy smile.

Home Care
Prevention represents the best approach to safeguard your oral health. Routine professional care, twice daily effective oral hygiene, a healthy balanced diet and smart lifestyle choices are cornerstones to lasting good health. Our dental team is here to help you achieve your oral health goals and keep you on track with your preventive dental care appointments. The two principle oral hygiene regimens involve twice daily brushing and flossing.
Brushing should be performed at least two times a day (AM & PM). In specific instances (ie. during orthodontic treatment when food builds up or after a sticky, sugary meal) additional brushing may be advisable. We recommend use of a soft bristle toothbrush. Research strongly supports the benefits of an electronic toothbrush, which provides a more effective and efficient clean. Techniques for brushing should be modified to best address an individual’s anatomy. Oral hygiene tutorials are routinely provided or reviewed at your dental visits.
Flossing truly is the only effective way to clean between your teeth, the most common area where cavities occur and can progress undetected until a check-up x-ray is taken. I strongly advise similar to brushing, flossing twice daily. There are various tools that help make flossing easier (is. Floss Holders, Superfloss and Special flossers for braces). Our dental team will provide you all the necessary tools and techniques to help make flossing a part of your daily routine.
At each stage of life, new challenges to your oral health emerge. Our highly trained and motivated staff are here to assist in developing a customized oral hygiene regime right for you.
